Description
This 121 km route starts and finishes in the beautiful village of Slaidburn, taking in Salter Fell and a loop around the quieter northern side of the Forest of Bowland.
It combines scenic Yorkshire and Lancashire back roads with eleven green lanes, making it a great full-day adventure for riders who want more than just a road route. The lanes are spread through the ride rather than packed into one section, so there is plenty of time to reset, enjoy the landscape and take in the views between them.
The route
Leaving Slaidburn, the route heads out towards the open ground around Salter Fell. This is where the ride begins to feel properly remote: big skies, moorland views and narrow roads that quickly make the journey feel like an adventure.
From there, the GPX follows a loop around the north of the Forest of Bowland and the Yorkshire Dales, linking a mixture of green lanes, quiet roads and traditional villages. The terrain changes throughout the day, from stony tracks and open moorland to tighter, more sheltered lanes.
The route eventually returns to Slaidburn, making it straightforward to start with fuel, food and a plan for the day before arriving back where you began.
What to expect from the green lanes
There are 11 green lanes included in this route. They are intended as an enjoyable introduction to trail riding rather than an extreme off-road challenge, but conditions can make a huge difference.
A lane that feels straightforward in dry weather can become much more demanding after rain, especially where there are ruts, loose stone, mud or standing water. Ride within your ability, take your time, and do not be afraid to stop and assess a section before committing to it.
This route is best enjoyed as a steady day out—not a race to complete every lane.
Before you ride
The GPX is a navigation guide, not a guarantee that every lane will be open or suitable when you arrive. Always check the current legal status of every green lane before riding, including local Traffic Regulation Orders, temporary closures and any seasonal restrictions.
Please ride responsibly:
- Use only routes with legal motor-vehicle rights.
- Keep to the defined line of the route and avoid widening tracks.
- Slow down for walkers, cyclists, horses, livestock and residents.
- Close gates as you find them.
- Avoid riding lanes if weather or ground conditions are likely to cause damage.
- Turn around if a route is signed as closed or does not feel right.
Bike and rider suitability
This is a long day at 121 km, so it suits road-legal trail bikes, adventure bikes and dual-sport machines with appropriate tyres. A smaller, lighter machine will make the lanes easier, but the route is more about good judgement and preparation than outright bike choice.
Bring fuel, water, a puncture-repair kit, basic tools, warm and waterproof layers, and offline navigation. Mobile signal can be unreliable in the more remote sections around Salter Fell.
